One of the drawbacks on steel silos are that they are unfortunately notorious for not being able to fumigate effectively with gaseous fumigants like phostoxin/phosphine – mainly because steel silos aren’t completely airtight – even with additional sealant packages that are included in most fumigation upgrade packages – resulting in either higher dosages required to try to make up for the loss of fumigant during the recycling process, or otherwise ineffective fumigation, due to lower concentration of the fumigant in the silo. It should be noted that fumigating with these gaseous methods are still much more effective in steel silos, than in flat storage, or for grain in bags or bunkers.

ABC Hansen recommends rather applying a spray on – contact residual insecticide, that are approved for on grain spraying applications – as the residual contact insecticides ensure even distribution of insecticide throughout the grain stored in the silo, and the same insecticide and applicator can be used to spray the silos, aeration channels and perimeters of the storage complex – to ensure  that any initial infestations are cleared before storage of grain commences.

The Dragonfly insectice applicator – does just this – it is typically installed at the intake of the silo complex – at one of the transfer points – where it pumps a spray of the insecticide over the grain, as it passed through the transfer point (usually at a bucket elevator intake, or a grain pump intake)

By adding the insecticide at the entry point, you are able to effective dose – at the correct quantities – the insecticide directly onto the grain – eliminating live insects that come into the grain from the field, as well as – with the residual action of the insecticide – taking care of any hatchlings that come out shortly after the application – ensuring that you have long term insect control on your grain.

The unit is portable – and can be moved to different transfer points if required – for example if a specific silo has to be treated – because of a resurgent insect infestation, or to be applied during offloading – to ensure the product that you are delivering is free from infestation.

The Dragonfly uses a mechanical dosing pump, together with a pressure pump and a flow control – where you can easily adjust the percentage of insecticide in your application – as well as the flow rate.

Typical insecticide dosages would be as follows (INDICATIVE ONLY – CONFIRM WITH YOUR SPECIFIC INSECTICIDE SUPPLIER)
Dilution ratio: 16.5:1 (Water:Insecticide- [6%])
Application doage per ton per hour: 500ml/hr of mixed insecticide/ton per hour.
Thus in a 100TPH intake silo complex – the dosage should be set to 50 liters per hour – using the water flow control valve.

At these dosage rates – a standard 25liter of insectice would be enough to dose approximately 800 tons of grain.

The mechanical dosing pump is pre-calbrated at the factory for a 6% addition of insecitice – and the dosing unit has a 300 liter water tank included.

The mechanical dosing pump, applies the set ratio to the water flow, regardless of the flow – and is capable of handling up to 2,000 liter per hour – with a dosage rate ranging between 3% and 10%.
