The ABC Hansen stone mills are often used in this reduction phase rather than sets of smooth rollers, making the milling system much more affordable.

In the first “Break” stages after polishing, the bran is separated from the endosperm due to the fluted roller action “bending” rather than cutting the wheat kernel parts allowing the bran to peel off the endosperm due to the difference in elasticity of the two distinct parts of the wheat kernel.

Maize mills can also be configured to allow for de-germinators and Hurricane roller mills rather than Hippo hammer mills which is a less expensive option.
